By train

Whittlesford Parkway, Great Chesterford and Audley End are the closest railway stations to the Campus and these are all on the Cambridge-London Liverpool Street line. The journey time from London is approximately one hour.

Cambridge is the closest railway hub, it is on both the London King’s Cross and the London Liverpool Street line, and also serves trains coming from the north.

Timetables available from National Rail Enquiries.

Railway stations Travel time from station to Campus by taxi
Cambridge (London King’s Cross and Liverpool Street line) 25 minutes
Audley End (London Liverpool Street line)  15 minutes
*Great Chesterford (London Liverpool Street line) 5 minutes
*Whittlesford Parkway
(London Liverpool Street line)
5 minutes

* Please note that Whittlesford and Great Chesterford stations do not have a taxi rank or telephone: use either Cambridge or Audley End stations if a taxi has not been pre-booked. There is no recommended walking route between these train stations and the Wellcome Genome Campus.

By bus

There is a small shuttle bus that runs between Whittlesford Parkway and the Campus. Since this runs on a first-come-first-served basis, interested delegates should contact the Conference Centre for more information.

We recommend organisers who know they will have large numbers of guests arriving by train to consider putting on coach travel from the stations. We would be very happy to organise this for you.

By bike

There are (mostly) segregated cycle routes to Campus from Cambridge and Whittlesford Parkway.

From central Cambridge take the cycle path along the guided busway from the train station and then join the DNA cycle path from Addenbrooke’s Hospital to Great Shelford.  From there, there is a segregated cycle lane to Sawston, which then re-starts on the otherside of Sawston, until the Campus. Or you can take national cycle route number 11, which takes you via Whittlesford.

If coming from Saffron Walden, please also see the national cycle route number 11 map.

By taxi

It is a good idea to pre-book a taxi when travelling to the Campus from a train station or airport.

Local taxi companies:

  • City Cabs – 01223 832832  (located in Sawston, good for Whittlesford Parkway)
  • Panther Taxis – 01223 715715 (located in Cambridge)
  • Walden Cabs – 01799 500500 (located in Saffron Walden, good for Audley End and Great Chesterford)
  • Abel Cars – 01799 513313 (located in Saffron Walden, good for Audley End and Great Chesterford)
  • Mid Anglia – 01223 836000 (located in Duxford, good for Whittlesford Parkway)

Taxis can drop delegates off directly at the entrance to the Conference Centre.  If taxi drivers have not been to the Campus before, they should navigate to the Wellcome Genome Campus (CB10 1SA) before following signs to the Conference Centre once on site.

By car

Arriving from the south:

Leave the M11 at junction 9 (signed A11 Newmarket) and take the first exit signed A1301 towards Cambridge. From the roundabout take the first left (about 800 m). At the next small roundabout follow the signpost left for the ‘Genome Campus’.

Arriving from the north:

Leave the M11 at junction 10 (note that M11 junction 9 is restricted and only accessible from the South). Turn left at the roundabout and straight over the next roundabout. Travel a mile or so on the A505 in the direction of Saffron Walden. At the next roundabout take the third exit (signed A1301 towards Saffron Walden). Pass two turnings to Hinxton village (these go to the village only), and take a right, at the next roundabout, signposted on to the Genome Campus.

Emissions calculations

We have roughly calculated the emissions produced by travelling from Cambridge by different means of transport:

Coach emissions: 0.02733 kgCO2e per passenger.km
Distance – Cambridge to Hinxton: 11 miles/17.6km
Emissions per passenger: 0.48kg/0.00048tonnes
50 passengers: 24kg/0.024tonnes

Rail emissions: 0.03549 kgCO2e per passenger.km
Distance – Whittlesford to Cambridge 9miles/14km
Emissions per passenger: 0.49kg/0.0004tonnes
50 passengers: 24kg/0.024tonnes

Average petrol car emissions factor: 0.27436 kgCO2e per mile
Distance – Cambridge to Hinxton: 11 miles
Emissions per car: 3kg/0.003 tonnes
50 cars: 150kg/0.15 tonnes

As you can see, emissions are significantly reduced travelling by train and coach, than driving in individual cars. We encourage organisers to put on coaches for their delegates. If this is not possible, please consider getting/giving a lift from/to a colleague.

Parking – information for event organisers

Hinxton Hall Conference Centre is located on the Wellcome Genome Campus, home of two world leading institutes, the Wellcome Sanger Institute and European Bioinformatics Institute. We are excited that work has started on further expanding our Campus to enable additional scientific organisations to base themselves here in the future, however this has had an impact on our car parking offer.

We are currently able to offer a maximum of 150 car parking spaces to our event bookers, and, depending on the size of the meetings we are hosting, this may need to be shared between our clients. With our drive to deliver a more sustainable offer, we think this is the perfect time to work with our event bookers to consider other options for getting to Hinxton Hall Conference Centre.
